Collecting Original Art: A Practical Guide

If you've found yourself on this page, you're probably standing on a threshold, somewhere between "I love this painting" and "but is this the right thing to do?" That hesitation is completely normal. Most art collectors started there.

This page is here to answer the questions I hear most often, and to help you feel confident about adding original art to your home or collection.

What makes a painting 'original'?

An original painting is a one-of-a-kind, handmade artwork created directly by the artist, on paper or panel, with physical materials. There is only one in existence. This is different from a print, which is a reproduction of an original (even a high-quality limited edition print is a copy).

When you buy an original from SanBCreative, you are purchasing the actual painting, not a scan, not a reproduction. The brushstrokes, the texture, the specific way light moves across the surface, all of that is part of what you own.

Does original art hold value?

Original art by living artists can appreciate in value over time, particularly as an artist's reputation, exhibition history, and collector base grows. More practically, original art holds emotional value. A piece that moves you, that you return to every day, is worth more than its purchase price in terms of what it gives back.

All SanBCreative originals are signed, dated, and come with a Certificate of Authenticity, which documents the title, medium, dimensions, and the artist's signature. This documentation is standard in the art world and matters if you ever choose to resell or insure the work.

What should I ask before buying?

Good questions to ask any artist before purchasing an original:

  • What paper or surface did you use? (Archival, acid-free materials matter for longevity.)
  • Is this signed? Does it come with documentation?
  • What's the best way to frame and preserve this medium?
  • Can I see additional photos before I commit?

I'm always happy to answer these questions. Just send me a message through the contact page.

How do I care for a watercolor original?

Watercolor paintings should be:

  • Framed behind UV-protective glass or acrylic to prevent fading
  • Kept out of direct sunlight and high humidity
  • Never touched on the painted surface

For detailed care instructions, see the Care Guide in my shop.

What if I'm not sure about a piece?

Trust your gut and give yourself time. If a piece keeps pulling you back, that's usually meaningful. If you have questions, reach out before buying. I'd rather you feel completely sure than feel rushed.
