A layered Blue Ridge ridgeline catches the first light of dawn, painted in soft golds, corals, and deep plum skies, with mountain laurel and rhododendron rising in the foreground. The original watercolor was created for a 250th anniversary exhibition, as a quiet, honest answer to what it means to love a place even when its history is complicated.
For America's 250th, I wanted to paint not the country's story, but the land that has carried it. This land has witnessed more than any single history could hold. I keep returning to paint it because love for a place and a complicated relationship with what's happened on it aren't mutually exclusive. I chose dawn because the light always returns.
