This original watercolor was created for a 250th anniversary exhibition, as a quiet, honest answer to what it means to love a place even when its history is complicated.

For America's 250th, I wanted to paint not the country's story, but the land that has carried it. This land has witnessed more than any single history could hold. I keep returning to paint it because love for a place and a complicated relationship with what's happened on it aren't mutually exclusive. I chose dawn because the light always returns.
